When most people think of heading to Greece, Santorini is one of the first islands that sparks to mind. With its volcanic rock cliffs, whitewashed villages, and breathtaking sunsets, it’s definitely one of the most popular – and crowded – destinations in the Cyclades. Having a unique travel experience on this island may seem impossible, but whether you travel to eat, love a good buy, or live for travelling off the beaten path, here are five places worth uncovering in Santorini.
For the shopaholic
An open-air market and shop with irresistible crafts, gifts, and trendy garb, Speira boasts everything from clothes to jewellery and soap to custom-made olive oil. Simply strolling through this aesthetically-pleasing outdoor shop is a treat. Open during Oia’s tourist season, each irresistibly packaged item is made by Greek artists or producers. The shop’s modern appearance and one of a kind objects will surely charm you – and help you finish your holiday shopping.
For the foodie
If you’ve spent enough time in Santorini, you know that if you’re planning on eating out, you’ll end up paying for the view, rather than the food, which can be off-putting if you’re a foodie. You won’t get the view of the Caldera at Oia’s Fino, but you will be spared the tourists and the high prices. Instead, you’ll be greeted with locals dining among friends, a hip staff, and creative, seasonal dishes made using fresh and local produce. The dish that stood out for me was the eggplant soufflée with warm goat cheese, sweet shallots, and a red wine sauce, which I paired with their white wine and elderflower-flavoured ‘Refreshing Grape’ cocktail. Opt for their cozy interior on chillier evenings or the stunning terrace when it’s warm out.
For the cocktail aficionado
If you love a good nightcap, or if you’ve already eaten but are craving that coveted Caldera view, head to PK Cocktail Bar in Fira for creative concoctions and killer vistas. With an extensive cocktail list that includes fresh, in-house ingredients, and a menu that changes monthly to adapt to seasonal produce, this bar has been open since 1976. The staff, always friendly and enthusiastic, are passionate about the craft and won’t hesitate to help you make your choice. My favourite is their selection of Champagne cocktails made with Veuve Clicquot.
For the bookworm
Dubbed the Shakespeare and Company of Santorini, Oia’s Atlantis Books is nestled in the basement of a typical whitewashed villa. Opened in 2004 by three globetrotting friends, this small and quirky nook – boasting books in Greek, English, French, and more – is well worth the visit, especially if you’re an indie bookshop lover. Their best-kept secret is the outdoor terrace outback, which provides breathtaking views of the water and where cultural events are sometimes held.
For the off the beaten track traveller
If escaping the hustle and bustle is on your mind, it’s definitely possible – even on one of the most touristic islands in Greece. Enter Emborio. Nestled near Akrotiri and the Red Beach, this little slice of local life is around 10 km from Santorini’s capital and 20 km from Oia. Complete with whitewashed houses, colourful doors, and a serene atmosphere, you won’t come across any tourists here – making it the perfect day trip. Read all about Emborio here.

Wow. Now I know there are other places to see in Santorini besides that iconic seaside photo!
Definitely! Thanks for reading, Carol 🙂
I’ve read quite a few posts on Santorini recently but none have covered the things you have. I like going off the beaten track so I would have a great time exploring Emborio, especially getting away from the tourists and mingling with locals.
Thank you so much, Amit!
The pictures are mind blowing! Good offbeat info on Santorini.
You seem to have explored the place well.
Thanks! Yup, with some research and curiosity 😛
I love Santorini and as a Greek, I admit that you’ve put great effort in the list and you have uncovered some real gems of the island. I’ve never been to Fino but this eggplant soufflée sounds delicious!
Thank you!!! That means a lot coming from someone who is Greek 🙂 Oh, it was delicious!
Santorini is high on my list, and these hidden gems make it even higher on the list. I love love love the look of Atlantis Books – I could spend hours scouring the shelves and reading – especially with those back terrace views! Thanks for the foodie tips too!
No problem 🙂 It was quite the gem – I could have lingered there for hours!
I think it’s the quality of the light in Santorini that really captures the eye. The whites and blues are just so incredible! The views form the terraces you visited are pretty epic as well. I haven’t been here yet, but hope to go one day.
The colours are incredible indeed! A stunning view at every turn. Hope you get to visit soon 🙂
This is truly a different take on Santorini. I have always ready only about the seaside and the whitewashed house with a volcano thrown in for the thrills. 🙂 I have not been to Greece and Santorini is on my list.
Thank you, Nisha! Hope you get the chance to visit soon 🙂
RUNS AND BOOKS A FLIGHT. But seriously – why am I still at home when I could be HERE? I haven’t been back to Greece in 4 years but I also never went to any of these places. I need to go!!
Haha, agreed 😛
